Senioritis refers to the sharp decline in motivation for school that typically plagues seniors during their second-semester, or after committing to college. To delve deeper into the affliction that has taken over our senior class, I interviewed students at different stages of senioritis.

Benny Feldman (winner of the “Worst Case of Senioritis” superlative)

On a scale from one to ten how bad would you say your senioritis is?

11.

How do you feel about being named the worst case of senioritis?

I feel like it’s completely fair. My downfall was pretty epic.

Are you committed to a college?

You know it!

How has this affected your motivation to do work in school?

Once I committed it sucked all the motivation I had out of me.

Why do you think senioritis happens?

There’s no more incentive to go through the school gauntlet.

What’s the most creative excuse you’ve used to get out of an assignment?

I actually haven’t used very many excuses to get out of assignments. I’m pretty straightforward if I’m just not going to school that day or if I’ll be away.

Margot Nelson

On a scale from one to ten how bad would you say your senioritis is?

I’d say like a 6 and a half.

Are you committed to a college?

I am.

How has this affected your motivation to do work in school?

Well, when I first committed, it didn’t really affect it, but now I can feel myself gradually being less motivated.

Why do you think senioritis happens?

Because people are tired of doing work and it’s senior year so they’re done with, they’re committed to college.

What’s the most creative excuse you’ve used to get out of an assignment?

That I left all my work in New York and went to Ohio and so I couldn’t do it.

Lionel Muench

On a scale from one to ten how bad would you say your senioritis is?

4.

Are you committed to a college?

No.

How has this affected your motivation to do work in school?

Since I’m in the second semester, I don’t really care whether I’m in college or not (in regard to my grades). They are unimportant if I am or if I am not.

Why do you think senioritis happens?

Probably because people don’t think their scholarly actions have consequences anymore.

What’s the most creative excuse you’ve used to get out of an assignment?

Not super creative but I’ve said I was sick after a concert because I caught something in the crowd.

Katie Strutton

On a scale from one to ten how bad would you say your senioritis is?

I feel like I’m at a 5/10.

Are you committed to a college?

No, I’m working on that.

How has this affected your motivation to do work in school?

I just care less about it but I still do it. I’ve accepted being mediocre.

Why do you think senioritis happens?

Burnout, people have been working so hard for so long to get into college and once they’re there, they just stop caring cause there’s nothing to hold them accountable.
