At the start of the HHS Winter Sports Season, all coaches and players have high expectations for their team.
Specifically, former Girls Varsity Basketball head coach Christopher Rohle has taken on a new role as the Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach and is ready for the challenges that come with it. The Boys Varsity Basketball team is led by star player and captain Dylan Heilakka, who is thrilled to be a part of this squad. When we interviewed him he stated, “I am seeing lots of progress as we continue with our practices. Our team has the skill to compete this season. It requires a lot of mental toughness.“ However, he acknowledged that the team’s endurance was one area for improvement: “I think that’s a big thing our team lacks. Endurance is the stem of basketball so we need to be in shape,” he said. He also stated that the team has great commitment, dedication and energy. When asked about the overall team chemistry, he said, “Most guys on our team this year have played CYO basketball together and have also played outside of school so they are all familiar with each other’s strengths and weaknesses which make practices very helpful and effective.”
New Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach Patrick Theodule is excited to start this season with his new Head Coach status.
Head Varsity Football Coach Christopher Crooms is also the new JV Girls Basketball Head Coach and is bringing his passionate attitude to the hardwood.
Boys JV Basketball Coach Francesco Scioscia is excited as always to coach his boys, especially after winning their first game against Blindbrook with a score of 44-43.
The Track team coaches also have high expectations for the team, especially with the girls team doing extraordinarily last year finishing sixth in Westchester as the highest scoring class C team. After the first track meet on December 6, spirits and energy are skyrocketing in the team.
The wrestling team has high hopes for the season after going 2-0 in the league last year, winning big against Irvington and against Woodlands. They are looking forward to continuing what they started.
Ice Hockey’s record is currently 1-2-1 (1 win 2 losses 1 tie) and the energy is up for them right now as they are ready to take on the rest of the season.
The skiing team is back for its second season, and it’s safe to say that the team is only going uphill from here. We had the chance to interview star skier Andrei Zuk.He said that he believes that this team will do very well this year because they have very solid racers and the competition is a little less intense this year. He also explained that the biggest challenge will probably be the snow because they would need as much as possible in order to compete. Finally, Andrei said that the biggest positive of the team is that “the team knows how to ski well“ and “they plan to cook up a storm this season.”
